Where did my downloaded files go?

Well it depends on 2 factors

1. What Operating System are you running? XP, Vista, Win7, Mac OS X?

2. What Web Browser are you using?

For this post we will focus on the 4 major browsers Internet Explorer, FireFox, Chrome, and Safari.

Microsoft Internet Explorer saves its downloads to they My Documents folder by default, if you are running Vista or Win7 that will be in your user folder. Click the “Start” button and go to the top right at the top, your “User” name

  • Windows XP: Documents and Settings<username>My Documents
  • Windows Vista & Win7: Users<username>Downloads
  • Mac: /Users/<username>/Downloads

Want to change the download location? Well the short answer is not easily so I recommend switching to Firefox or Chrome instead.

Mozilla FireFox pulled a fast-one a few versions back. It used to save downloads to your desktop, but now it saves them in a folder called “Downloads” in the “My Documents” folder.

In Vista and Win7 they are saved in the “Downloads” folder in your “User” folder. Click the “Start” button and go to the top right at the top, should be your “User” name.

  • Windows XP: Documents and Settings<username>My DocumentsDownloads
  • Windows Vista & Win7: Users<username>Downloads
  • Mac: /Users/<username>/Downloads
